Convert iTunes Video M4V to AVI, WMV, MPEG, MP3, VOB(DVD)

iTunes monopolization

“I purchased videos on iTunes, but I can’t play them on my video player, because they are in some ‘protected’ M4V format that only works on iPods. How can I convert iTunes videos to MPEG or WMV format so I can play them on My portable video device?”

Many people are frustrated when they purchase videos on iTunes, and then find out they can’t play those iTunes video on their portable player, PDA or cell phone.
Apple, provider of the popular iTunes service only allowed customers play the iTunes video with portable players manufactured by itself (iPod, iPhone).

Those with other brands of portable video players such as Archos and Creative Zen players are comparably priced, have much larger screens, and will play almost any video format, including the standard MPEG, AVI, DivX, and Windows-only WMV files. But iTunes will not copy a protected M4V video to any of these non-iPod devices.

So, here is the reason why we need to convert the iTunes video:
1. To play videos on operating systems where iTunes does not exist, such as Linux.
2. To use a non-Apple portable video player to play iTunes video.
3. To watch your videos in the car, or the big screen in your living room
4. To loan the video to a friend, just like you’d do with a book, record or CD
5. To convert M4V video to VOB (DVD format) and use DVD burner software to burn DVD movie played on portable and home DVD players
How to convert iTunes video M4V to MPEG, WMV, AVI

I searched on Google, Yahoo answers and post the question on large number of forums, unfortunately, after scouring the Web for days, I couldn’t find a FREE way to convert M4V to MPEG, WMV or AVI format.

Then I tried to burn the iTunes video onto a DVD and re-import it into iTunes just like how to remove the protection from the iTunes audios (M4P) by burning it onto a CD and re-import it as mp3. I failed, cause iTunes doesn’t have a DVD burning option, then I used Nero, but it still doesn’t work as Nero doesn’t supports M4V format.

And finally, a software solution. I came across a few kinds of converters on Google search, they are Tunebite, Daniusoft and Noteburner. When I was testing the free trials one by one, what makes me comfortable is the Daniusoft media converter which has a much more simple interface (which I captured from its website below) and usage, it lets you convert copy-protected M4V iTunes video clips to unprotected WMV and other video with only three steps (Add files->Choose output format->Conversion). And this media converter “watches” as you play the video on your screen and captures the video stream, which can then be saved in the format you choose. According to the Daniusoft website, This DRM media converter does not circumvent DRM copy-protection technology, so it is completely legal. It costs US$35, but you can download a trial version that will convert the first 60 seconds of the video for free.

Finally, please remember to keep the converted iTunes video files only for personal use because of the restrictions imposed by iTunes. Otherwise, it might be smarter (and possibly cheaper) to just buy the video on disk.

How to convert DVD movie, video, YouTube video to chromatic iPod nano

Below is the step by step tutorial about how to put DVD movies, video files and online YouTube video onto Apple Chromatic iPod Nano.

First, let’s take a look at the video formats the new iPod nano accepts:

H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
H.264 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 3.0 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats;
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats.

In order to enjoy DVD movies, video files and YouTube videos on the iPod nano, you need to rip the DVD movies and convert the video files to the video formats iPod nano recognizes, and then transfer the output video files to your iPod nano with the sync of iTunes Library.

The tool you will need is Clone2go DVD to iPod Converter. And below are the detailed steps:

1. Add DVD movies, video files or YouTube video

Insert the DVD disc into the disc drive, click the Open DVD button to import it if you are going to enjoy a DVD movie on your iPod nano. Or if the DVD movie is saved as a folder on your computer, you need to click the Add Video button to locate that folder, which is composed of two separate folders: VIDEO_TS and AUIDO_TS. From the VIDEO_TS folder, select the .vob file to import and then click OK.

You can also import videos stored on your PC by clicking the Add Video button. The supporting formats are shown as follows:

If you want to enjoy online YouTube videos on your iPod nano, click the YouTube button on the main interface. In the pop-up windows, copy and paste the URLs of the YouTube videos one by one. There will be a list of the added YouTube videos, which will be downloaded automatically one by one. And the downloading status is clearly shown on the list. After the status of all of them indicates Completed, you can tick whichever videos you want to watch on your iPod nano.

After the DVD movies, video files or YouTube videos are imported, you can preview it on the main interface. If you only want a clip of the DVD/video, you can drag the Start to trim and Stop to trim button to get the certain segment.

2. Choose a proper profile

From the drop-down list of Profile, you can select the most appropriate profile:

Note: From the profile graph above, we can learn Clone2go DVD to iPod Converter also applies to converting DVD movies, video files and online YouTube video to video formats for iPod touch, iPod classic, iPhone, Apple TV, etc.

3. Start to encode

Now you can click the Start Encode button to starting ripping DVD movies, converting videos or downloading and converting online YouTube videos for your iPod nano.

Note: The output video files are easily available by simply clicking the Folder button on the main menu after the ripping/converting process is done.

4. Move the output files to iPod nano

Open iTunes, click File on the main menu. From the drop-down list, select Add File to Library or Add Folder to Library. And now you can put the converted files or folder to the iTunes Library. Connect your iPod nano to PC and now you can transfer the converted videos to your iPod nano with the sync of iTunes.
