Scanner Camera
McGiffert posted a new topic:
I’ve posted some shots I took with a scanner camera I built after reading the latest MAKE.
The camera uses a cheap magnifying glass for the lens, a foam-core box (nested to allow for focus), and a USP Canon scanner that I got at a garage sale for $3. All told, the thing didn’t cost more than $10 to build.
The modifications to the scanner are a bit tricky, but manageable. The CIS chip is very light and IR sensitive. For these first shots I had best success shooting indoors at dusk or later. I found a "hot mirror" which is a dichroic filter that rejects IR light and this has allowed me to take shots outside. The bloom in the shots (overexposed blown-out areas) are what make the images interesting to me, more like an old photo.
The article suggested using aperature cards to reduce the amount of light hitting the chip, but I found these produced a strange stripe of image in the center of the overall image. It allowed outside shots, but a much narrower field of image. Using an IR and ND filter allows me to keep the lens open (2.5") without the strange striping.
