Hi all,

Electronics newbie here. I’m getting started making an adapter board - I want to connect a Garmin GPS 18LVC to a PC to create a stratum-1 NTP server. (Following the directions at time.qnan.org.)

To connect the GPS 18 LVC (6 wires, appears to be 26AWG) to a chunk of perfboard, the author in the above site used "a single-row six-pin connector pair", without specifying any more details.

I’m likely to use 0.100" perfboard. What kind of connector should I use?

The connector should be fairly easy to attach to wires (either by soldering, crimping or whatever), and not require special tools to attach, since I’m only going to build a handful of them. Orientation guidance would be good (keep users from plugging it in backwards.) Latching would be nice but not a requirement. It should have a solid connection to the perfboard, obviously.

I was going to go with a simple DB9 connector, but that seems large for the job. Looking at mouser or digi-key shows many different possibilities, and I feel lost.

Any recommendations for me? What’s your favorite kind of connector to work with?
