How to use youtube to promote your site
As of June 19th at 2:45pm central time:
Videos Uploaded: 280
Video Views: 1,314,296
Channel Type: Director
Channel Views: 50,775
Subscribers: 2,268
1. On average I get about 75 youtube subscribers a week
2. My videos get about 5,000 - 6,000 video views a day.
3. Everyone of my videos is watermarked with my site address. So my site URL has been seen over 1.3 million times, or 5,000 - 6,000 times daily.
4. I am also a youtube partner - meaning I get to brand my channel with a banner. Plus, a banner appears next to every one of my videos. This means I have 280 banners on one of the top ranked websites world wide - one banner for every uploaded video.
How would you like for your website address to be seen around 10,000 times daily? That 5 - 6 thousand, that is just from youtube. Once you factor in yahoo video, dailymotion, metacafe, break, google video, aol video and another half dozen video sites, well, the total views per day would be almost impossible to factor. Because once you have your video edited, and ready to upload, you are only limited by how much you can upload in one day.
And all of this is at an amazing cost of $0, except my time.
Now then, do I have your attention and are you ready?
Step One:
Create yourself a youtube account. It helps if you use your site address or something related to your content. Youtube account names are almost as good as a full website name - so its very important that you get this right.
Dress up your account page. This means changing the colors from white to something else, or add a nice back ground image. Please do not use a background image that repeats itself 100 times - it gives me a headache.
Step Two:
You need a camera and some video editing software. (duh, figure that one out)
Camera - Something that takes video & sound. (another duh)
Software - The easiest video software to use is Windows Movie maker that comes with XP service pack 2 or Vista.
Step Three, Film the video:
Organize your video introductions so they look semi-professional, just a simple picture, logo and music will do just fine. Plan your videos before you make then. Think about what you are going to say before hand. If possible, use a tripod to hold the camera steady.
Try to use a camera that films in 640X480 and at least 30 frames per second. This will give you better resolution on the youtube video. Some cameras film at 15 frames a second. This type of video will cause pixels. If the video is blurry to start with, it will really be blurry after its uploaded to youtube.
If your camera films in AVI format, convert it to mpg during the editing phase. This can sometimes reduce the file size by half.
If you are going to post the video on your site, keep the topic of the site in mind. This video can go along with a review, blog or some other discussion.
Step Four - editing the video:
This is maybe the most important thing you can do. Be sure to put something like "This is a "your website name here" production" at the first of the video. Put some kind of logo at the introduction of every video. Use some kind of background music, just a few seconds long.
Never use anyone elses copyrighted material - ever. This video should be 100% your original production and your property. Never use background music that belongs to someone else. If youtube catches you doing copyright infringement, your account will be deleted.
At the end of the video put something like "Visit the website "your site here.""
Youtube has a 10 minute or 100 meg limit on regular members. If you are a youtube partner, the limit increases to 1 gig or 100 minutes. Keep this in mind while editing the videos.
Posting the video:
In the video description, on the top line post an address to your site. If the video is going to embedded in your blog or page, post a link to that page as well.
Video Title:
Short, sweet and to the point. Video titles are more then just a title, they are keywords. So put the important words first in the title. Leave out unnecessary words, such as "The" at the start of the title. Instead of making a title like - "the wonderful video", just name it "Wonderful Video". The video title is the most important keyword you can have.
Video Description:
Link to your website goes on first line, then a break to the next line. Put as many key words into the video description as possible. Copy the words from your "Key Word" box and paste them into the bottom line for your video description. If the video is going to be embedded in your site, after the video is embedded, post a link to that page in the video description.
The video description should contain as much information as possible. Every word that is put in the description is also a keyword. On a few videos I have seen, the description was nothing but keywords. Instead of writing a description, the person put names of famous actors in the description, and certain sex acts.
Bait and Switch:
If you are a youtube partner, this is strictly forbidden by the terms of service.
This is a practice that I do not use, nor do I endorse it. When you edit your video, in the exact middle is where the preview image is going to come from. A lot of people will put a picture of a pretty woman in the exact middle of the video. That way, the preview image of the video is the woman - not some ugly guy sitting there talking.
Videos like this usually get more views then those that have a bland preview image.
If you are a youtube partner, stay away from bait and switch. Putting an image in the middle of the video that might attract more views will get the video deleted.
Sexy and Pretty women:
Get a nice looking pretty woman to help you do the videos. Sex sells and that goes for youtube as well. Maybe have someone in the video with you as a guest speaker. Or get a girlfriend / wife to be in the video.
If some of the men on youtube would put their wives in the video, they might get more views.
Youtube Partner:
Once you have a few videos uploaded, sign up for a youtube partner account and brand your channel. This will allow you to put a banner next to every video and at the top of your youtube profile page.
Once your partner account is approved, you will need to link it to your adsense account. adsense = free money
The more popular the video is, the more people that watch it, the more clicks you get, the more clicks you get, the more money you make - its that simple.
Make the videos personal:
If someone off your website ask you a question, instead of clicking the reply button in your email - make a video about the question. Make the video personal by saying something like - "Mark from Texas writes in and ask." Then make the video about the answer to his question.
Refer to the website in your videos. Mention your website and ask people to visit.
Success on youtube comes at a cost, so its not free. The cost is lots of hard work, thought and planning.
Make videos that match the topics of your site, except one personal nitch:
Most of my videos are hiking, camping, hunting and gardening related, except for one group of videos - my bar-b-qs. Every once in awhile I will throw in a bar-b-q video just to break things up a little.
Cute videos:
One evening I found a turtle in my garden. So I grabbed up my camera and made a short 30 - 45 second video about the turtle. Within 24 hours that video got around 800 views. A few weeks later it is one of the most viewed videos on my channel.
While filming my garden, a kitten came over to see me. So I put the word kitten in the title of the video. That video is also one of the most viewed on my channel.
People like "cute" videos. Whether the video is about kittens, kids, pets or other animals - it is sure to get views.
Conclusion:
If you can get your partner approved, the youtube account will serve two functions.
1. To promote your website
2. Make money off adsense clicks.
Now then, go make some good videos, drive traffic to your site and make some money.
Thank you for your time.
